The Derek Trucks Band - Sierra Leone

As the storm broke, so too did any sense of confidence or self-fulfillment. At the time, my soul was closed behind shutters as thick as those I had recently nailed to the windows. My friends spoke around me, their cups as full as their excitement. To them, it was an excuse. An excuse to drink, to socialize, to live.

I saw it as more of visual metaphor for prison. The prison I was already in. I looked out of my eyes, like a bored student looking out the windows of a bus, but I never really saw.

But then, quick as could be, she turned. A smile, the most subtle curl of the lips, a flick of the hair, a positive acknowledgement of my presence. I’m not a complicated man. The rains stopped.

  2. Amazing. Found my heart swelling at scenes from films I didn’t even like. Do yourself a favour and remember why even the worst films deserve to exist.

Movie Montage of the Day: Good: 2011 is nearing its merciful end. Better: It’s time once again for genrocks annual Year in Film retrospective.

Over 230 films produced and/or distributed in 2011 have been handpicked to celebrate the year that was in motion pictures. Reality may have sucked, but make believe had a pretty good year.

A complete list of films in order of their appearance can be found here.

    Youth Lagoon - Cannons

The service went long, and the church bells began to ring. Slowly at first, but slowly picking up speed and force. An entire orchestra reaching a crescendo as the priest struggles to sing his homily. Barely audible, but perfectly in sync. The bells aren’t overpowering the message, they are bolstering it. In the absence of a linguistic message, the emotional one becomes the focus. The twelve strokes last a lifetime.

Boston Spaceships - Ready to Pop

Times are tough. You’ll have a hard time finding someone to disagree with you on that one. Employment is down, the gap between the rich and the poor is increasing, we’ve been hit by every goddamn natural disaster mother nature can throw at us, and even Obama’s gone from being our saviour to our scapegoat.

Still, like the horns swelling at the end, there’s something incorporeal that makes me feel like there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. In love, alright. It’s gonna be. That’s how it’s gonna be.

Fuck, maybe I’ll just go sober for a while.

The Adultery Brothers - Don’t Listen To It

I gotta hit the road, let the tires talk for me. God knows you won’t listen to the words I’m trying to say. You’ll wake up tomorrow to an empty bed, empty drawers, and (hopefully) an empty heart. The car will be gone, the tapes will be missing, and you’ll finally understand.

(Don’t worry, I’m under no misconceptions. I’m sure you’ll run straight into the arms of one of your many fucks, crying about trust and commitment, as if they meant shit to you)

I’m going to drive right through Nashville, see what Austin holds for me, maybe swing through the husk of the Sunset Strip, and all the while you’ll be pretending to feel some sort of pain. Fuck, you’ll be pretending to feel some sort of anything. Sure, it’ll hurt me, but I’m already hurt. I’ll get over it. Maybe I’ll be back, or maybe I’ll live in Boston for a while. I’ve got Creedence in the deck and nothing but open road.

Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Same Mistake

Anybody can walk on water! It’s easy, if you’ll just try. Don’t think about falling in, don’t think about drowning, about struggling to stay afloat. Just take that step out of the boat and walk.

Look, even I can do it. I didn’t even take my suit off. I don’t have to walk around fountains anymore, I don’t need a glass bottom boat to see the fish. Hell, I can sink down just a little bit, if I really want to, and feel them around my ankles.

No, not like like that, more like this. It’s about knowing that you can do it. When you believe that you’ll sink, you will. Water’s just a collection of molecules, like dirt or concrete. It’s all the same principle.

Join me out here once you get it. You’ll find the world much is more open.

    Abel - Boogie Nights

The thrusters blasted off and the earth shrank away from me, while the stars remained static in the sky, somewhere out there. Everything I had ever known was running away as fast as they could. All my friends who told me I was stupid for volunteering, all my exes whose pictures I couldn’t stand to look at anymore. My family, who even now wouldn’t accept that I wasn’t a doctor or a lawyer.

    I’m saving all of them.

The brown clouds rushed past the window in front of me, until finally the nose broke free. At that moment my heart stopped.

I saw the sky. It was the most beautiful thing I had ever set my eyes on. The blue of the air, the sun, burning with all its might millions of miles away, even the clouds behind me looked hauntingly beautiful. When the sun’s rays touched them, they took on a deep bronze hue instead of the murky, river bottom brown I was used to. Everything turned to gold in front of my eyes. Up until this point I had felt sorry for King Midas, but this brought tears to my eyes. I had the Midas gaze.

The earth itself shrunk away, a brown marble spinning towards the others, ready to collide and send them all shooting in different directions. I closed my eyes to sleep. The journey would be long and monotonous, but there had to be another land out there for us.

I would find it. Columbus and Magellan coursed through my veins.

David Bowie - Sound and Vision

Don’t you wonder sometimes, about Sound and Vision? Sound is one thing, sound is measurable. We know the wavelengths, the speed at which they travel, the pitch, the timbre, the colour. Sound is like math, no more or less beautiful than the uniform way in which numbers go together in the same way every time they are combined. When two is multiplied by itself, one receives four, like a gift from the gods. In much the same way, the same wavelength will always give one an E, regardless of circumstance.

Vision is different. The same yellow will change given the quality of light. It can seem orange, or brown, or even disappear completely. Electric Blue can appear to shine and sing, or be muted and sickly. Nobody even knows how it may appear to a different set of eyes, if it seems to be our vision of red, or green.

Sometimes, however, the two can seem one in the same. A collection of colours and shapes will sing with the voice of gods, or a mix of wavelengths will paint with the brush of artists. All the math in the world can’t explain the magic of Sound and Vision.
